What I LIKE about this movement is that it sends a very strong message to “young black girls†that their lives have value & worth
–and more importantly–that THEY should be the ones to demand/attach that value & worth.
In my life, I’ve been a Whore, a Mistress, a WIFE & mother of two. I was recently engaged for a 2nd marriage.
I enjoyed each role equally (in fact, I found being a mistress a little more agreeable to being a Wife) and I agree with the poster “Beautiful Stranger†that being a “wife†isn’t the grand be-all end-all achievement of the female existence. It’s really not. For me, just being a SMART woman ruling her own space of any type is the true ticket.
But no matter how I think & feel as a Womanist/feminist…I also know that the MAJORITY of our young black girls today have not been fully developed as people themselves..and I know that America is a vicious society that uses the souls of Black women as its scapegoat and nourishment. The society literally reflects its hatred onto us and then denies that we’re worth a quarter all in one meticulous blow. Many times, Black Males are the biggest supporters and deliverers of that crippling blow.
So with that in mind, I support NWNW if only for the fact that it’s one more “rare & affirming†message to young Black women. A much needed reminder that if they don’t have better choices than the drudgery being passed in Black Culture as “normalâ€â€“then they can reject all of it and not fall for the prevailing “You owe it to Black Men to do whatever they say and want—you owe it to the Movement, the Black Community, etc. etc.â€â€¨We NEED new messages and we need to plant better dreams in the heads of our daughters. As much as I love, champion & respect the Baby Mama’s, the Ho’s, the mistresses…I can’t be against the image, hope and support system of FAMILY.
I think I’d die without my father & my family.
It’s a wonderful goal.

CLARIFICATION on my last post
__________
What I’m saying is that most young Black girls today are not Strong/Together & don’t have high self esteem. Therefore, what I like about this movement, is that it gives them PERMISSION to value “self†& demand better treatment. It also gives them a “layout goal†that can be used as an example of how to gain something more from men than a baby or a nut. The legality of marriage gives power and that is also a consideration.
I’m all for women having babies on their own if they want that–but they need to carefully PLAN something like that and have the financial security to back it up. There’s nothing wrong with having a baby alone.
But it IS better “all around†for Black women to start making Men treat them better. And this movement argues for young women to think about that. You CAN demand better sexual treatment & you DO have the right & the permission to put your own interests first and not the men.
After all, the men can’t get pregnant. So they can run from any situation. We don’t have that luxury.
OK–that’s what I was saying MORE CLEARLY put.
