Did you know that 70% of black children are born out of wedlock?

Before folks think the No Wedding No Womb movement is about bashing black single parent families, I want to present another informational gem:

Marriage has declined among white parents, too. White out-of-wedlock births have increased to a rate higher than the one in four that black births reached 40 years ago. [SOURCE: Out-of-Wedlock Births in Black America, NPR, 2005]

Houston, we have a problem and this problem is bigger than black and white. Now I’m not trying to be a downer, but you go ahead and call me Debbie! Seriously folks, we’ve got to recommit. To ourselves, to our families, to our neighborhoods, but most importantly, to the children. And surprisingly, marriage is not the answer to this problem.

Having been born into a two-parent household, I feel blessed that I was able to call on both my mom and my dad to help make it through my youth. However in 2008, my whole world changed. After 31 years of marriage, my parents called it quits. I was devastated. To this day, I’m still coping with the loss and the strangeness of their new relationship. Out of their painful reality, I learned my own personal truth – marriage is the absolute solution! A personal responsibility to our children is. Everyday, we can combat this statistic by keeping a watchful, but caring eye on all of the children that come into our presence.

NO WEDDING, NO WOMB!
